HORMONE THERAPY ( HRT)

Benefits of hormone therapy  may have been downplayed

A few years ago,the reputation of hormone replacement therapy (H R T)  took a hit .In  2002, the US Women's Health Initiative study found that long-term combined H R T increased life-threatening problems such as stroke ,cancer and heart attacks in some women . As a result, about  two-thirds of women using H R T stopped therapy ,often without consulting their doctor.
Experts have recently rallied in its defence . "The latest data on H R T do not warrant the fear and ultra-conservative approach adopted in 2002," says Dr Alastair MacLennan , of the school of paediatrics and reproductive health at the University of Adelaide , Australia . "When H R T is started near menopause for symptom control and improved quality of life ,there may be additional bone, heart and possible cognitive benefits that outweigh risks  that are not significantly raised until the age of 60. It is especially useful in women who go to through early menopause before 45, he explains " .
At this stage , H R T is recommended as a preventative for osteoporosis only.
Other ways to help reduce the risk of osteoporosis include calcium supplementation and exercise ..
