PREVENTING PREGNANCY.

Vaginal Contraceptive Sponge.

The vaginal contraceptive sponge is soft and round, approximately 2 inches diameter, and made of a synthetic substance impregnated with a spermicide. Before intercourse, the sponge is moistened with water to activate the spermicide and inserted in to the vagina to cover the cervix. The spermicide halts sperm activity, and the sponge acts as a barrier to block sperm for entering a women's uterus. The sponge is for one time use only over a 24 hour period, and should never be reused or used during menstruation.

Good Sides
The sponge is easy to insert and may be inserted immediately prior to intercourse ; intercourse may be repeated within a 24-hour period .The sponge may protect against certain sexually transmitted diseases .It can be purchased without prescription and needs no fitting.

Bad Sides
The sponge can cause an allergic reaction which should disappear when the sponge is discontinued .Removal problems can occur; if the loop cannot be located,or if the songe cannot be found or removed ,or if it fragments,it should be medically removed.Because the sponge is new,it is not known whether there is a relationship between toxic shock syndrome (TSS)and sponge use; to minimize the risk ,it should be left in place no longer than 24 hours and never used during menstruation or immediately after a birth or an abortion.Cultural aversion problems similar to those of the diaphragm may limits its popularity.
