Beware of Diabetes , the silent killer!!!

Image
I ndia has emerged as one of the fastest growing nations in the past decade. The march towards progress has also seen a rise in stress levels and life style diseases ,especially in India's working population .According to the World Health Organization ,an estimated 31.7 million people in India had diabetes  in 2000 and this number is estimated to more than double to 79.4 million by 2030.These figures are indeed staggering ,but what is even more alarming is that healthcare professional and experts feel the number is likely to be much higher, given the current pandemic of diabetes in India . While Type 1 diabetes as an auto-immune disorder ,mostly detected in children ,Type 2 diabetes is characterised by insulin resistance and relative insulin deficiency in adults .You are at risk if diabetes runs in your family ,you have hypertension ,you are overweight ,you have impaired glucose tolerance or you are a women who had gestational diabetes when you were pregnant . As per the Internation

4 Be plump and proud  But is being  overweight necessarily unhealthy  in all cases ?A groundbreaking study published in T he Lancet in 2007 found that about 30% of people classed as obese (ie ,with a body mass index -- BMI--of 30 or more)were actually metabolically very healthy, with low cholesterol ,blood pressure and blood sugar. They were also responsive to insulin - which isn't supposed to be true about fatter people. A THIRD OF OBESE PEOPLE MAY NOT NEED TO LOSE WEIGHT  In short, one in three of those being endlessly cajoled to lose weight may not need to. It may,in fact,be actively harmful.Canadian researchers from the University of Montreal compared the effect of a low-calorie diet on a group of metabolically   healthy obese people with a group who were obese and at risk. They found insulin resistance ( a market for diabetes) improved by 26 % in the at-risk group but it got 13% worse among the metabolically healthy. So even if your BMI is officially dangerously high but

3 Get in the sun without sunblock   (or take vitamin supplements instead) Vitamin D is the new nutrient superstar, linked with lower risk of all sorts of disorders including heart diseases, multiple  sclerosis and rheumatism .And now it looks as if it helps with weight loss, too.  During the summer of 2008 ,in a small trial of 38 , a researcher from the University of Minnesota ,USA ,reported  that those with more vitamin D in their blood lost most weight .For every extra nanogram per milliliter they lost an extra 225 grams.Other trials ,too, have linked higher vitamin D levels  with less obesity. But why? All vitamin D experts agree that a lot more research is needed - but in the meantime, one intersting theory is emerging from imperial collage London.Because sunlight is the main source of vitamin D .a low level of vitamin D may make the body think that winter is on the way ,and therefore that it has to store more food. There is also much debate about how much you should be taking .T

2 Keep cool Older dieters may remember something called brown fay.Unlike the undesirable white stuff, this was a dieter's dream.Instead of storing excess energy as fat, brown-fat  tissue burned it off to keep you warm at least in mice.Brown fat fell out of  favour because researchers couldn't find much in humans but now ,thanks to the New England  Journal of Medicine ,its back in fashion .The idea is to expose people to cold temperatures .They then make more brown fat and their weight drops .Women kept at 22 degree C used up 27 more grams of body fat a day than those at 27 degree C .So turn down that thermostat. Check your testosterone level          ( men only) If you are a middle aged man whose middle is spreading , it may not just be that you are exercising less and eating more, but that you are making too much of the female hormone estrogen. Although we talk about male and female hormones , we all make both, and we all use testosterone to make estrogen .This is partic

Another New Year, another attempt to lose weight? Hmm..... sounds like it's time to ditch that old diet and try these top new fat-shifting tips instead ..     l Once upon a time, staying a healthy weight was easy. It could be summed up by the phrase " calories in,equal calories out". To lose weight you simply had to practice the reverse of home economics - spend more than you earned .Unfortunately for many, but perhaps not surprisingly ,it turns out that people are rather more complicated than bank accounts . A lot of research has gone into unraveling the intricacies of our personal fat accounts - driven by the dream of winning the big prize of an effective fat pill .Some of the findings have been ,to put it mildly ,counter-intuitive.They also suggest whole new ways of dieting.. To stay a healthy weight, you need a hormone called leptin to work properly  .It sends "I'm full" messages from the fat cells up to the brain ,where they go,among other places ,t

FROM HELEN LEDERER , British comedienne and actress I have 20 year's worth of failed diets under my bulging belt. This one, though, sounded intriguingly different . I would be hypnotized into thinking i was wearing a gastric band. Genius ! Why risk the scalpel when your mind can do it all it for you ? And so i handed my mind over to Marion and Martin Shirran ,who have pioneered this method  at their clinic in Spain. The treatment would take four days- but could a virtual rubber tourniquet really replace  years of unhappy (and happy) indulging? Marion and Martin's approach is about getting "into your mind,"using neuro-linguistic programing and cognitive behavioural therapy to find out and treat what makes you eat inappropriately . The first session was about what i want and need: two very different things. In the second we looked at all the food-related thoughts we have in the course of a day. Most are positive and logical; others ,quite negative. How we react affects our

HORMONE THERAPY ( HRT)

Image
Benefits of hormone therapy  may have been downplayed    A few years ago,the reputation of hormone replacement therapy (H R T)  took a hit .In  2002, the US Women's Health Initiative study found that long-term combined H R T increased life-threatening problems such as stroke ,cancer and heart attacks in some women . As a result, about  two-thirds of women using H R T stopped therapy ,often without consulting their doctor. Experts have recently rallied in its defence . "The latest data on H R T do not warrant the fear and ultra-conservative approach adopted in 2002," says Dr Alastair MacLennan , of the school of paediatrics and reproductive health at the University of Adelaide , Australia . "When H R T is started near menopause for symptom control and improved quality of life ,there may be additional bone, heart and possible cognitive benefits that outweigh risks  that are not significantly raised until the age of 60. It is especially useful in women who go to thro

Vitamin D

Prevent vitamin D  deficiency and you will cut  your risk of osteoporotic  fractures and falls . The international  Osteoporosis Foundation estimates older adults need 20 to 25 micrograms of vitamin D a day. people who are obese ,have limited sun exposure ,or who already have osteoporosis could need more, but check wit your doctor first . New research from the University of Melbourne suggests that intermittent high doses may actually be counterproductive and possibly increase the risk of fractures ..... Fast fact  One in five men and one in three women over 50 will have osteoporotic fractures.

Bone Wise

Image
Knowing the risk factors helps foil osteoporosis   A recent global study  of osteoporosis in women shows we are too  quick to ignore the seriousness of the disease.According  to the study ,only 33 % of postmenopausal women with two or more risk factors - such as a family history, early menopause or coeliac disease - perceive themselves to be more fracture -prone than their peers .Its a worry ,given that 12 to 15 % of those with hip fractures die within six months from fracture complications or sub`sequent immobility . No one can afford to overlook the disease .Over 12 million Indian men are osteoporotic ,and studies suggest that they tend to have bone loss at a younger age than men in other countries . The urban male is more prone to osteoporosis than his rural counterpart because of a more sedentary lifestyle. Understanding you have a risk , and taking it seriously, pays off , adds associate professor Jacque-line Center ,of Sydney's Garvan Institute . "It is still specu

Higher Education = Lower Dementia

Image
S tudies have shown that the more time a person spends in education when young , the lower the risk for dementia later on. But whether or not its the education itself - and perhaps the associated  higher socioeconomic status and healthier lifestyles - that affords this protection  remained a mystery. Now,researchers from the UK and Finland have revealed the answer : Its all about coping. Examining the brains of 872 people who 'd been part of three long-term aging studies , the researchers found that while brain changes seen in dementia are not necessarily linked to education level ,subjects who had more education level ,subjects who had more more education were better able to compensate for the effects of the condition as they aged . "There's not a one-to-one relationship between being diagnosed with dementia during life and changes seen in the brain at death ,"says the University of Cambridge's Dr Hannah Keage , co-author of the paper published in the neurology

Condom

What it is and How it works The condom is a sheath of thin rubber (latex) which is put on a man's erect penis  before intercourse to collect the semen, keeping the sperm from entering the women 's vagina. About 1/2 inch of the condom is left slack to hold the semen .After climax ,but before losing his erection  ,the man must hold the rim of the condoms against the penis as he withdraws so the condom cant slip and spill the semen . A new condom must be used for each act of intercourse... Advantages               A male method, the condom is easy to use, effective, inexpensive ,usually can be easily obtained and does not require a prescription .It also protects against certain sexually transmitted diseases . Disadvantages                    The shelf life of the condom is about five years ,but it may deteriorate or is roughly handled .Its use interrupts lovemaking and some users find sexual pleasure decreased .   Who Should Not Use The Method Any man can use a condom unles

How Animals Think

Image
African grey parrot T he surprising truth about bird brains, monkey minds and more some birds can trick you, researchers say. Monkeys kick themselves for mistake in judgement .And at least one parrot figured out something close to the mathematical close to the mathematical concept of zero. Animals can be remarkably devoted -as the stories on these pages prove. What's less obvious is how clever they are .In study after study over the past decade, they've shown abilities previously thought to exist only in humans. Take the blue-feathered scrub jays found in the US.A few years ago, Cambridge University professor Nicky Clayton ,PhD,found that these birds can be surprisingly devious ,remembering not only what foods they've hidden but where ,how long ago ,and whether anyone else might have noticed ." if another bird was watching ,they'd wait until that bird was gone and then move the food."Clayton says. Even more interesting , not all jays protected their food

Winterize Your Skin

Image
And its best to do it in two ways: 1 Physically . Cold air can dry out skin. Heated rooms and scratchy woolen clothes can worsen conditions such as dermatitis .To restore your skin's natural  moisture ,try an invigorating  exfoliating scrub once a month. A routine often neglected in cold-weather months, sloughing off dead skin cells makes way for plumper ,moisture-packed cells underneath. While you are in the shower, gently rub on a mild exfoliating product and rinse thoroughly. While you are still damp, seal in the moisture with a good body lotion. 2 Mentally.  Year-end festivities can take a toll, too,by raising levels of the hormone cortisol, which can increase oil production .That can lead to breakouts in people prone to acne. Stress can also slow down wound healing. To reduce stress, dermatologists recommends exercising to release feel-good endorphins, getting enough sleep, and even having a good laugh !

Calcium : A Key to Long Life ?

Image
W ho would have thought that the fountain of youth spouts ... milk? But  that's the striking suggestion from a recent study at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden . Researchers followed more than 23000 middle aged and older men for a decade and found that those who reported getting plenty of calcium in their diet ,about 2000 mg per day ,were 25 % less likely to die in that time than men who consumed little of the mineral in food and drink .It's possible that the high-calcium diners had other healthy habits ,the researchers say.But a diet containing lots of the mineral is known to lower blood pressure, cholesterol , and blood sugar levels.  The study was all-male ,but calcium expert Dr Robert P.Heaney at Creighton University ,USA,thinks the result are likely to apply to women too. He suggests all adults aim for 2000 mg of calcium per day -from food,if possible, because other nutrients amplify its effect. Asian adults get only about 450 mg of calcium in their diet each day ,on ave

Practising correct breathing techniques can help manage stress and anxiety and promote relaxation .The aim is to move from upper-chest breathing to abdominal breathing. The following breathing technique will help strengthen your diaphragm ,lower your blood pressure and heart rate, and slow the rate of your breathing. Diaphragmatic breathing 1. Lie on your back, with your knees bent and your head supported. 2. Place one hand your upper chest and other just below your ribcage,so you will be able to feel your diaphragm move as you breathe. 3. Inhale slowly through your nose so your nose so your stomach moves out against your hand. The hard on your chest should remain as still as possible. 4. Tighten your stomach muscles, letting them fall inward as you exhale through pursed lips. 5. Easily Tired ? Talking sick leave too often ? Is your skin pale ? Do you have brittle nails? Do you have experience shortness  of breath ,or nausea ? If you answered yes to most of these questions ,you could be anaemic. How widespread? According to a recent National Family Health Survey ,around 59% of Asian women suffer from anaemia ,In children ,anaemia can hamper growth and language development. What causes it? Anaemia occurs due to low levels of haemoglobin - the vital iron-containing protein that carries oxygen in the blood -stream. A diet in iron ,vitamin B12 and folic acid causes otherwise healthy individuals to become anaemic .Some diseases like malaria ,or internal bleeding  caused by an ulcer or tumour , can also lead to anaemia .Women who experience heavy periods too are at risk.
